Heera Celebrates Medical School Acceptances
Heera Kodiyamplakkal, born and raised in Tamuning, Guam, is charting an inspiring path to a medical career, driven by her love for learning, her community, and a deep desire to improve healthcare access on the island. A proud alumna of Harvest Christian Academy and St. John’s School, Heera has recently celebrated acceptances to multiple medical schools including the University of Rochester, Oregon Health Sciences University, and the University of Central Florida. She is still waiting to hear back from other institutions and is thoughtfully deciding where to begin her next chapter.
Reflecting on her application journey, Heera recalls it as one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of her life. "There are so many resources available today—sample essays, editing tools, and advice—but they can lead to self-doubt," she shared. Despite moments of uncertainty, Heera focused on crafting an application that authentically represented her values and passions. Her efforts were validated when her first acceptance came from the University of Rochester, a school she had admired since high school. "Receiving that acceptance felt like a full-circle moment," she said.
One of the standout aspects of Heera’s application was her ability to connect meaningfully with interviewers. "I think my interviews were the strongest part of my application," she explained. With support from mentors at Chålan Åmte and her own preparation, Heera found confidence in sharing her story and vision during interviews.
Heera’s journey to medicine was shaped by her relatives, who dedicated their careers to improving Guam’s healthcare."Hearing their stories made me aware of the struggles patients faced, from the lack of physicians to limited access to medications," Heera said. Observing the health disparities on Guam, combined with witnessing friends and family battle diabetes and heart disease, inspired her to explore ways to address these challenges. Through years of competing in science fairs and shadowing local physicians, Heera solidified her dream of becoming a doctor.
Heera’s college years were a time of growth and discovery. At Vanderbilt University, she embraced diverse leadership and service opportunities, including serving as president of United Against Inequities in Disease (UAID). This role allowed her to lead food drives, health literacy outreach, and HIV/AIDS research, fostering a passion for addressing healthcare disparities. Additionally, she taught health lessons to elementary students from refugee families and choreographed cultural dance showcases, blending her love for teaching and creativity.
On returning to Guam during her summers, Heera volunteered with Todu Guam, supporting relief efforts after Typhoon Mawar and participating in health outreach initiatives. "These experiences reinforced my commitment to serve Guam," she said. "Yes, we face a shortage of healthcare professionals and resources, but we also have a strong mindset to uplift each other and our community."
Heera’s love for Guam extends beyond her professional aspirations. Fond memories of snorkeling, scuba diving, and barbecues with friends and family highlight her connection to the island. She cherishes the diversity and talent within the community, recalling her participation in events like the annual Diwali Ball and school concerts.
As she prepares to embark on her medical education, Heera offers words of encouragement to aspiring students on Guam. "Don’t be afraid to ask for help and connect with others. Everyone’s journey is unique, and embracing your passions will keep you motivated," she advised. She envisions a future where more healthcare professionals from Guam work together to create innovative solutions for the island’s challenges.
Heera Kodiyamplakkal’s story exemplifies resilience, community, and dedication. Her unwavering commitment to serving Guam, coupled with her determination to grow as a physician, promises a bright future for both her and the island she calls home.
