Mission

The Pacific Islander Pre-Med Mentorship Program is dedicated to empowering and guiding aspiring Pacific Islander pre-medicine students on their journey toward a career in medicine. Our mission is to foster a supportive community that provides mentorship, resources, and opportunities to enhance the academic, professional, and personal growth of Pacific Islander individuals pursuing a pre-medical education. Through mentorship, education, and community engagement, we aim to bridge the gap, inspire excellence, and cultivate future leaders in healthcare who will make meaningful contributions to Pacific Islander communities and the broader medical field.

Vision

Successful application to medical school often entails a robust understanding of resources that compile the strategies, activities, and perspectives that communicate to medical school admissions committees that an applicant possesses the attributes that are desirable in a physician. Students coming from Guam face particular difficulty in identifying where these resources may be. This is likely due to the limited networking opportunities they may have with individuals who are familiar with the challenges and the most updated resources to overcome these challenges.

Through personalized mentorship, tailored resources, and insightful advice, we aim to demystify the complexities of the application journey, empowering our mentees to confidently navigate each step towards achieving their dreams of becoming physicians.

This initiative aims to create an avenue for current medical students to share the resources and perspectives they have accumulated during their successful application processes. We will accomplish this through the successful development of a system and infrastructure to connect these medical students with the pre-medical students who are needing this type of advising.

To overcome the dispersion and global separation that Pacific Islander students are faced with, this program is developed with the intention to maximize the capacity for remote capability. This is accomplished through using video conferencing tools such as Zoom. Scheduling will use an automated calendar service through the Chålan Åmte website or through any satisfactory alternative.

Lastly, this program also aims to capture critical metrics that characterize the pre-med applicants from Guam in an effort to inform targeted improvements to our service. The findings of our data capturing initiatives will be shared with the mentees we advise as well as the institutions they engage with.

Our Projects

At the moment, we have over twenty five mentees with several applicants currently interviewing and taking their MCAT.

We also have conducted several panels at the University of Guam, with the purposes of spreading awareness about the medical school application process, while answering FAQs about the biggest pain points within the application cycle and medical school journey.

Finally, we are working on an MCAT resources and practical study tips compendium that we can hopefully publish to our mentees by the end of the year.
